May is Bike Month

May is Bike Month. We invite you to participate in the many exciting events happening in our communities. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just getting started, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and, most importantly, reasons to get out there and ride. 

Here’s a rundown of the events from us and our partners:

Description: This event, hosted by the Heights Bicycle Coalition, is perfect for those new to cycling or wanting to improve their skills. Learn about bike maintenance and safety, and practice riding in a safe environment.

Description: If you’re interested in bike commuting but need help figuring out where to start, this webinar is for you. UGO sponsors this event with support from University Circle’s Sustainable Transportation Advisory Committee and Bike Cleveland. It features a panel discussion with experienced bike commuters in the Greater Cleveland area.

Location 1: University Heights, John Caroll University, parking lot off Carroll Blvd next to the Dolan Science Center
Location 2: Downtown Cleveland, Willard Park (the Free Stamp)

Description: The Ride of Silence is a worldwide event that began in 2003 to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured by motorists while cycling on public roads. The event is held annually on the third Wednesday in May and is now hosted in over 300 cities worldwide. The ride is a slow, silent procession that typically covers about 8-10 miles and takes about an hour to complete. Riders meeting in University Heights will follow a 5-mile route (one-way) on-street group ride led by the Heights Bicycle Coalition to University Hospitals. After a short presentation, riders are free to return to where they began or return with the group. Those starting the ride Downtown will follow a 5-mile route (one-way) on-street group ride escorted by the Cleveland Police Bicycle Division to University Hospitals. After the short presentation, riders are free to find their way back to where they began.


National Bike to Work Day (Heights Bicycle Coalition)

Description: Enjoy your bike commute and stop by HBC’s energizer stations at the intersection of Edgehill and Overlook Roads, along one of Northeast Ohio’s most used bike commute routes. Coffee, pastries, and friendly conversation await you.


National Bike to Work Day

Location 1: University Circle, Northwest corner of the Euclid Avenue and E. 100th Street intersection.
Location 2: Downtown, North side of Superior Avenue, right in the middle of Public Square

Description: UGO and Case Western Reserve University sponsor the event at University Circle with support from University Circle’s Sustainable Transportation Advisory Committee. Description: Riders of all ages and abilities are invited to join Shaker Heights Mayor David E. Weiss on a guided bike ride as part of the County’s “Bike with a Mayor” series. The “Bike with a Mayor” series aims to provide residents with the opportunity to engage in physical activity with their elected leaders while also learning about their city’s dedication to providing greenspace and trails for year-round enjoyment.

Description: Watch the inspiring documentary, The Street Project, hosted by Bike Cleveland. This film follows a group of cyclists as they work to make their city more bike-friendly. Tickets are $10.

Description: Explore the beautiful Mill Creek watershed by bike with Bike Cleveland. This family-friendly ride is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn about our local ecosystem.
