Bike Month is Here!

Celebrate Cycling all month long by joining us for activities that inspire us to ride more and connect to each other.  May is National Bike Month, and since 2010, Cleveland Heights has joined with cities nationwide to celebrate. Heights Bike Coalition (HBC) will be sponsoring events throughout Cleveland Heights and University Heights this month. HBC invites you to participate in these, as well as in bicycling events organized by our partners in our region. 
May 1-31: May Bike Challenge
Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, NOACA, invites you to join the May Bike Challenge that takes place from May 1-31. Individuals can compete to see who can log the most bike commutes and errands on NOACA’s trip planning and logging platform – Gohio Commute. Each week, those who have logged a bike commute on Gohio Commute will be automatically entered into a raffle for fun bike prizes.
May 6: Cleveland Heights Police Bike Auction
The Cleveland Heights Police Department will hold a bike auction on May 6 at 1 p.m. at the Cleveland Heights Police station. Free bicycle helmets will be handed out to all children under 14 who purchase a bike. Cash only. For more info, click here.
May 9: Walk or Bike to School Day
On May 9, Cleveland Heights-University Heights public schools and some private and parochial schools will take part in Walk or Bike to School Day. Check with your local school for additional information.
May 15-18: Bike to Work Week
Bike to Work Week runs May 15-18, concluding with Bike to Work Day on May 18. That morning from 7–9 a.m., HBC will provide free coffee and treats at the corner of Edgehill and Overlook roads – one of Northeast Ohio’s most traveled bike routes. We thank Phoenix Coffee for donating the coffee for this event. 
May 16: Ride of Silence
The Ride of Silence, a worldwide coordinated event, takes place each year on the third Wednesday in May. This year’s ride will be May 16. starting at 7 p.m. from the parking lot south of the Dolan Science Center of John Carroll University. This 5-mile ride honors and remembers cyclists killed or injured on public roadways. The Heights riders will join with a contingent from downtown Cleveland for a brief memorial service.  
June 2: Bike Tune-Up Day
Bike Month in the Heights wraps up on June 2, with a Bike Tune-Up Day at the Coventry Courtyard on the northwest corner of Coventry Road and Euclid Heights Boulevard. This free event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and experts will be on hand to assess bicycles’ safety and make minor repairs. This event is first-come, first-served, so attendees are advised to arrive well before 12:30 p.m.

NOACA also announced the 2018 Commuter Choice Awards. This employer-based competition rewards organizations that encourage and incentivize sustainable commuting: biking, walking, transit, carpool or vanpool. Any employer in Northeast Ohio is encourage to enter this fun, friendly competition. More than anything, it’s a great opportunity for employers to learn about all the things they could be doing to encourage alternative commuting and help clean the air in Northeast Ohio.
